1 On slavery in the ancient world, see Moses Finley, Ancient Slavery and Modern Ideology (London, 1980). This chapter will not cover the slave trade or its impact on African society, or slave life in the Americas, in any depth. On these topics there exists already a substantial literature. See Orlando Patterson, Slavery and Social Death: A Comparative Study (Cambridge, MA, 1982); Herbert S. Klein, The Atlantic Slave Trade (Cambridge, 1999); Joseph E. Inikori and Stanley L. Engerman (eds.), The Atlantic Slave Trade: Effects on Economies, Societies and Peoples in Africa, the Americas and Europe (Durham, NC, 1982); Eugene D. Genovese, Roll, Jordan, Roll: The World the Slaves Made (New York, 1974); Robert William Fogel and Stanley L. Engerman, Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery (Boston, MA, 1974). Comparatively little work exists on Ottoman and North African slavery, which continued in full force also in this period. It is very difficult to reconstruct the experience of the slaves themselves. Slave autobiographies exist, but most were written under guidance of literate whites. An account generally accepted as authentic is The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Written by Himself [1789], ed. Robert J. Allison (Boston, MA, 1995).
